Standing Indian Mountain (Backpacking)

Standing Indian Mountain, Nantahala National Forest, Submitted by Troop 477 (Hightower Trails District.) Kimsey Creek Trail to Appalachian Trail to the peak (5399 ft) of Standing Indian Mountain, then back on the Appalachian Trail to the Lower Ridge Trail, ending up at the staring point in Standing Indian Campground. Total miles: 10.1 approx.

Standing Indian Campground is off of US 64, about 10 miles from Franklin NC. Drive time to the Campground is almost 3 hours. A map of the Nantahala National Forest is a must when planning trips, as all the trails are shown. In addition, several Appalachian Trail sections are available in this area.

This area lends itself well to Scout backpacking trips with Scouts of different experience levels. There are many trails and side trails to the Appalachian Trail that will allow a Troop to plan a shorter length for less experienced backpackers, while allowing the whole Troop to meet on the trail and camp together.
