Year Established:
1986
Size: 8,562 acres
Description:
Numerous streams and waterfalls, rocky outcroppings and high
peaks combine in this area to create a rugged mountain Wilderness of
high scenic quality that lies divided between Chestatee and
Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Areas. Elevations range from about
1,800 feet on Boggs Creek to 3,846 feet on Leveland Mountain. A
dense forest of hardwoods and scattered pines has returned after
substantial logging operations early in this century. Most of the
trees are at least 60 years old. Approximately 41 miles of trout
streams attract many anglers with Boggs Creek receiving the most
use. Deer, squirrels and grouse are commonly seen with black bears,
turkeys and raccoons in lesser numbers. Across US 129 lies the Blood
Mountain Wilderness.
The Appalachian Trail follows the crest of the Blue Ridge through
this area for 6.6 miles with a shelter at Whitley Gap. In addition
to the AT the Raven Cliff Falls Trail
leads upstream 2.5 miles to the Raven Cliffs Scenic Area
with its high vista points and waterfalls, and ravens do reportedly
nest here. This Wilderness receives relatively heavy human use.
Location: Northern Georgia.
Easiest Access: From Atlanta, GA, take US 19 north;
continue north on US 19/129 to Neel's Gap and the Appalachian Trail
and hike east. The time for Atlanta is two hours driving on about
100 miles of road.
