Glaze Family History
Arvel Glaze was born February 24, 1925, in Rockdale County, Georgia, the son of Luther Marion Glaze and his wife Herman Artifical Kilgore. He was not given a middle name.
Arvel's childhood sweetheart was Nellie Laverne Humphries. On her thirteenth birthday, Arvel presented Laverne with the gift of a handkerchief, which one of their children still cherishes. Arvel and Laverne were married on October 26, 1943.
During World War II, Arvel served in the United States Army. Family members confirm that he was a P.O.W. for a time, although he did not talk much about it.
While serving in the U.S. Army, he sent Laverne a "sweetheart poem" cushion. The cushion, blue with gold and red fringe, had the following poem printed on it:
Arvel Glaze was a Firefighter for the Atlanta Fire Department (AFD) for 29 years.
